Take the Opportunity to Give

Disclaimer: This post is sponsored by Arkansas Children’s to support the 2018 Festival of Stars toy & donation drive. I am helping promote the statewide event as part of a paid promotional partnership. However, all opinions are my own.

With the busyness of the holiday season in full swing, I want to take a minute to offer up a simple way to share some goodness in your community. The Festival Of Stars toy drive for Arkansas Children's Northwest in Springdale will be next Friday, December 14. That means you have just over a week to run out and purchase a new gift or toy for a child who needs a brighter Christmas this year. There is a particular need for items for babies and teens, though gifts for all ages are collected.

In Springdale, the collection will take place from 7am until 6pm, at the new hospital on Gene George Boulevard, just west of I-49. There will be hot cocoa, holiday music, snacks and special guests for people to enjoy when they stop to make donations on site.

Our family has a yearly Advent calendar that includes special activities and acts of kindness listed to complete each day. Many of our activities include an aspect of giving to others during this month. It's an easy way to help my kids understand that the holiday season is about so much more than them being on the receiving end of gifts. We donate to little free libraries, bell ringers and food pantries during this time. A toy drive makes a great addition to the list!

Unwrapped toys collected on December 14 will be given to patients and their families who are staying in the hospital on Christmas. There are drop-off locations all over the state, and an online donation site for those who prefer to make a financial donation. Here are just some of the things that your monetary donation can help with:

In this season of giving, I encourage you to find something that makes your heart happy to support. Let us all remember others who are in need of a little holiday cheer.

2015: Out with a bang!

Look! I'm here!

I think that the 4th Quarter got the best of me in 2015. All the prep work for holiday time in retail--Santa, events, sales, advertising---just wow. It sure left me with very little time or energy for blogging. And I still had to take care of holiday prep at home!

Things are certainly much different, and much slower, now. This is where I fill you in on all the drama that we ended the year with.  Let's see...

On December 17th, Lee went to the doctor for what he thought was kidney stone pain, and got put on medical leave from work. Turns out he has a hernia, not kidney stones! The surgeon couldn't even see him until after Christmas for a consult. He's been off work since then, and set to have surgery this Friday. Say a little prayer that everything goes smoothly. He will likely be off work another four weeks at least.

The very next day, I found out that I was losing my job. I won't get into details, but there has been an ownership change at the mall and a lot of other people were let go as well. In nearly 20 years of professional work, this is the first time I've lost a job. It's very strange.

Talk about a bad week! Yikes.

The good news is that I was able to be home with these little turkeys while they were out of school for holiday break. We cooked, baked, had play dates and got ready for Christmas. It really was very nice.

Now it's time to find a job and get 2016 started off better than last year ended. Wish me luck!  A bonus? Now I have more time for blogging!

Holiday Recap

Hello! I guess this means that I'm back from my blogging break.  As you can see, there have been absolutely zero changes to the blog...not what I had planned for this break.  With the bad weather, working holidays in retail, traveling and other general craziness, I just didn't get my list of blog chores done.  But I will work on it.

Now that we are well into the new year, I thought I should do a quick recap of Christmas.  We stayed home and celebrated with just the five of us.  We started the day with checking out the kids' loot from Santa and opening our gifts.  Then we had a big breakfast while the kids played.  We later enjoyed a big feast at home and finished the day by watching some of our new movies.

The kids' Christmas jammies were a big hit this year!  We had fun being silly and taking some pictures.

Here are the kids with their favorite gifts.  In fact, in a strange turn of events, each kid specifically asked Santa for one thing only. Lucky for them, Santa delivered!

More than anything, Boy Twin wanted a "Bob the Builder truck."  Doesn't he look so happy?  Big Sis requested, begged, pleaded and longed for an American Girl doll.  Um, Santa did what he could on that one.  Meet Sadie; Big Sis is in LOVE!

Girl Twin simply requested "a new Sissy," which means "a new doll" and NOT a new sister. We are thankful that Santa understood that loud and clear.

We ended our holiday festivities with a weekend trip to Wynne to see the family.  In all, my kids had four Christmases and thought they'd hit the Christmas Jackpot.  I told them many times that they are so lucky to have so many people that love them and want to spoil them rotten.  We had a great time visiting, laughing and eating with everyone this holiday season.  Thanks to you all for loving my kids.

Merry Christmas to All--I'm Outta Here!

I've decided to take my first blog vacation.  Basically, it boils down to this:  I'm cold, tired and have three kids and a job that need my undivided attention right now.  That leaves little to no time for blogging and little to no time for sleeping, unfortunately.  I'm going to take a break for the rest of December and maybe until mid-January.  During this break, I'm gonna do some shopping, wrap some gifts and eat way too much junk food.

I'm also hoping to do a little blog makeover and learn how to do some "tech" things that I've been neglecting to do with the blog.   Check back in January and make sure I've survived.

Until then, Happy Holidays from our nut house to yours! XOXO.

Super Halloween

As we've done for the past two years, we went with yet another group theme for the kids' Halloween costumes. I swear I'm going to do this until they are too old to let me get away with it! I love it!  Going with a group theme just makes the whole process so much simpler.

This year they were all super heroes.  Even with a theme, they all chose their individual costumes.  The past two years, I was able to make most of the costumes handmade, but this year I just couldn't swing it.  But I'm certainly not disappointed.

Boy Twin, the little Web Slinger, in action.

Super Twins!  Sis is "Miss America," who we found out was a comic character in the early '40's.  Her super power was levitation, which is pretty cool.

Edit: Husband has informed me that I got it wrong on Girl Twin's costume.  She is, in fact, "American Dream," who is the daughter of Captain America.  Her powers are super strength and a proficiency in martial arts.  In my defense, I did look at a "Miss America" costume for her, and it was eerily similar.  There.

And, of course, our Wonder Woman!  She was working it, for sure.

I had to work at Malloween on Halloween, so I made sure that Grammy could come help dad out to get all the monkeys dressed and ready to go. Since it was cold and rainy, they went to dinner in costume, then headed up to the mall to get some loot there. Thankfully, they weren't too worried about getting a lot of candy...they were just happy to wear their costumes.

Here are some memories from Halloween 2011 and 2012.  And yes, I already have  a theme picked for next year, so get ready!

Seriously, this is the best photo I got from 2011.

Halloween 2012 rocked! My favorite so far.

Easter, Part 2

Before we left town for Easter weekend, the kids were able to have egg hunts at school and daycare with their friends. That made me happy.  However, it made me sad that we were going to miss our church egg hunt on Saturday; it's always a fun time.

With the weather being crummy and the ground sopping wet, the kids weren't able to have a proper Easter egg hunt while we were out of town.  We did have a very lame indoor hunt at TP's house; it was so much fun that I forgot to get out the camera.

Surprisingly, I also had to field some rather curious questions about the Easter Bunny before bed on Saturday.  The conclusion is that if you believe it is, then it is.  Let's just say, nobody objected to having a basket full of goodies on Sunday morning!

As our luck would have it, just as we were loading up for the long drive home, the clouds parted and the sun was brightly shining in the sky.  Thanks to Daylight Savings Time, we were able to get the kids home in time for a couple rounds of egg hunting before dark.

Our sweet neighbors also brought the kids over a bag of treats each.  They always do nice things for our kids for all the holidays.

Easter Weekend Getaway

We decided to load up and head to the Hardys' house for Easter weekend.  It turned out to be mostly cold and rainy, so we were stuck inside the whole time.  Trust me, this is not good for children who've been buckled into car seats for four hours!  We got a visit from Grammy and Nanny on Saturday, which we all enjoyed.  However, the kiddos were wild and cranky.  To kick off our festivities on Saturday, we baked a cake and colored our Easter eggs, which they all liked helping with.  We ate some good food, visited and colored lots of pictures while we watched it rain outside.  At that point, I was wondering what on Earth we were going to do with those dyed eggs since we clearly weren't going outside to hide them!

TP and Jonathan have worked so hard on the addition to their home.  It turned out so nice! I just wish I had taken a photo to share.  Their garage was already built in, but unfinished, when they moved into their house a few years ago. Now, they can enjoy having a new den and lots more space for Baby Hardy to explore.

Grammy and TP helping color the eggs.  Nanny always manages to hide from the camera!

After about two eggs, Girl Twin was over it.  She went to the couch and napped while we finished.

A little sibling sweetness in the midst of the chaos!

Pop came over to visit us on Sunday before we had to head home.  Look at all this attention he got! And I promise, my dad's eyes are open...he will love this picture.

Nothing but trouble right there!

I think they are two peas in a pod.

One last photo before loading up to leave.

Home for the Holidays 2012

I am back from my blogging hiatus. Don't get too excited, y'all.  I was off work for 13 days straight, counting the weekends. It was glorious, for the most part. I had so many things I wanted to get done, including blogging and working on a new blog design. Very little of it got done, if any. It's odd how quickly 13 days can pass when you have children around needing your attention---and cookies needing to be baked (and eaten).  It also didn't help that I got a stomach bug for the first two days; then it took another couple to fully recover.

Anyway, here's a brief summary of the past couple of weeks in Bramell Land:

--I went to help with Big Sis's kindergarten Christmas party at school.  Learned that I'm thankful that I didn't choose teaching as my profession. Her teacher must have the patience of a saint.

--Stomach bug, two days.  Sick mama on the couch. Luckily, kids were still in school and daycare for the worst of it.

--Sick Girl Twin for a whole day. This required constant holding and snuggling. And cleaning vomit.

--Final Christmas prep--wrapping, fretting over gifts and how to do last minute shopping since I couldn't leave home, if you know what I mean.

--Holiday meal planning and shopping.  We went with an Italian Feast: chicken parm, spaghetti, lasagna and linguine with Alfredo sauce.  Totally yummy and worth being in the kitchen all afternoon.

--Load up and travel to Wynne for a few days after Christmas.  More on that in another post.

Here are some photos of the kids getting their loot. Why the heck didn't I brush their hair? I should have known to do that, because my mother has years of Christmas photos showcasing my childhood bedhead, too.

Above:  Big Sis's very favorite gift from Santa--it's a Disney Princess art/activity set. She colored, drew and painted for four days straight. No lie.

Below:  Boy Twin's favorite gift---a Spiderman Stunt City toy.  It has a Spiderman figurine that can climb up the wall of the building! He loved showing it off to daddy. I think daddy kinda likes it, too.

Below:  Girl Twin's favorite gift--Minnie Mouse Bowtique on the Go Fashion Show.  Girl didn't put it down for days!

Above: Big Sis checking out her stocking loot.
Below:  I swear the twins aren't drunk, it just looks like it.

The best part of Christmas?  The kids played and SHARED so nicely all day!  The dad and I got to spend some time on the couch together and I got some relaxing time snuggling my baby girl.  I love it when Santa gets it right.

Sweet Holiday Tradition

I know a lot of families do this, but our Christmas PJ tradition is one of my favorites! We let the kids open one gift on Christmas Eve, which is their pajamas for bed.  This makes for really cute photos on Christmas morning.  And, what's funny is that Big Sis was so excited to open that first gift---she didn't even remember that it would be pajamas!

Here is our 2011 photo:

And 2012:  (not sure why it's so blurry)

We had a great Christmas at home. I'll have some pictures up in a few days. Santa really got it right this time--the kids love their gifts and have even been sharing!

Righting a wrong in the kitchen....and pie!

If you are a regular visitor here, you may remember back to this post in October when I shared my family's "recipe" for dressing.  Well, I made my second attempt at it for Thanksgiving since we were stuck at home without the real cooks in the family.

Here's what it looked like:

I'm overall happy with how it turned out.  Actually, on Thursday, it kind of sucked. I got it too dry again! But I was determined not to let it beat me.  So with leftovers on Friday, I added some broth and heated it up. Lee let me know real quick that it was "almost perfect" this time! YES! Sweet validation.

After our fantastic turkey dinner, we got to have this glorious pie!

I've heard it called a Kentucky Derby Pie, or a Derby Pie, but all I know is that it's delicious with a capital D.  I used a Paula Deen recipe for mine. It was my second time making it, and this was just as good as the first time.  A couple of tips, though:  the recipe makes two pies (I gave one to a neighbor) and you MUST eat it warm with vanilla ice cream.  Give it a try!

Did someone say BACON?

This time of the year we are all looking for creative and unique gift ideas for our family, friends and loved ones.  Do you hate shopping for the person who has everything?  Do you try to think of something unusual, that shows you really put some thought into the gift?

Look what I have here! This is a Petit Jean Bacon & Ham Gift Box that will knock their socks off! As many of you know, Petit Jean is an Arkansas based company that offers many excellent products from bacon, to hams and sausages.

And YOU could WIN one of these unique food baskets right here on my blog!  This particular package is specially branded with the Dallas Cowboys team logo.  If you want to see this, and other Dallas Cowboys branded products, you can click HERE.  This would make a perfect gift for the Dallas Cowboys fan in your life. And, if you aren't a fan? Doesn't matter! The delicious ham and bacon is reason enough to enter this giveaway.

This gift package includes:  (1) package of Sliced Smoked Ham
                                          (1) package of Sliced Peppered Ham
                                         (1) package of Hickory Smoked Bacon
                                          (1) package of Hickory Smoked Peppered Bacon

I have been thinking of what you might do with this gift box, and here's my list--
  • A teacher gift. Trust me, they get enough candles and apple trinkets to last a lifetime.
  • Great for a family member who doesn't live in Arkansas; introduce them to the goodness of Petit Jean Meats.
  • Makes an excellent hostess gift during your holiday travel.
  • Perfect for a holiday gift for your boss.
  • Or just keep it for YOURSELF!
My family tried out this very same gift box around Thanksgiving. I was so thankful to have something besides leftover turkey to eat! We had ham sandwiches for lunch and bacon for breakfast for several days.  I personally love the peppered bacon, but the kids preferred the plain hickory smoked variety; the little ones couldn't handle the spicy flavor from the pepper.

HOW TO ENTER THE GIVEAWAY:  You must leave a comment on this post.  Tell me what food is a must-have at your holiday dinner table.  Also remember to leave me your name and email address so I can contact you if you win! Deadline to enter is 9:00am on Saturday, December 8th.  Winner will be chosen at random from all comments left on this post.

Our Family Secret

This week, I'm participating in the Blogtober Fest Challenge sponsored by Arkansas Women Bloggers. Today is the last day of the challenge.  The topic is Favorite Fall Recipes.

I live in the South, and come from a family of good cooks and good eaters.  That's really no secret--have you seen me? Our way of doing big family gatherings is that everyone pitches in to bring a dish. Really, this is cool because that way nobody gets stuck doing all the work--we can have up to 20 people at any time. I, however, have been given a pass on the cooking lately since we are always traveling across the state with three kids in tow...but I digress.

Our #1 most popular family dish is my Nanny's cornbread dressing. Now, don't get this confused with stuffing; this is most certainly not coming out of a turkey's butt. Nanny's dressing is not just made for traditional Thanksgiving dinner; we have it during regular Saturday lunches in the middle of May. We can be cooking steaks on the grill and someone will make darn sure that Nanny is bringing some dressing! It's really kind of odd.  But here's the problem: there is no recipe, and nobody can make it like her.

The first Christmas after the twins were born, we decided it was wise to stay home instead of hauling it across the state (for obvious reasons). My sister and her husband joined us here instead. Immediately, we realized that Nanny would not be here to make the dressing and neither would my mom. Well, my sister did not get the cooking gene, and I do alright, so I said I'd give it a shot.  I emailed my mom for some directions. I will share with you what I got in return (I swear, I am copying this exactly):

"How to make dressing....

I'm like Nanny in that I don't measure b/c that's the way she taught me. THE MAIN SECRET IS THIS--DO NOT OVER STIR AFTER YOU ADD THE BROTH OR IT WILL BE GUMMY.

Start with 1 cup of buttermilk and beat in 2 eggs by hand. Add corn meal mix, a little at a time, until it is still pourable...not real thin, but not too thick or it will be heavy when cooked. If you get too much cornmeal, add a little more buttermilk until you get the consistency you want. Bake until it's nice and brown on bottom. There are also directions for making cornbread on the cornmeal package, if you prefer precise measurements. (duh!)

Finely chop celery (about a cup or so) and an onion. Boil these in chicken broth until almost clear and tender. Meanwhile, crumble the cornbread into chunks in your baking dish. Mash 2 boiled eggs with a fork until very fine and add to cornbread. When celery and onion are done, dip out with slotted spoon and mix into cornbread. Sprinkle on the sage and some black pepper. Mix gently with fork or your hands. Once combined, pour on the turkey broth, a little at a time. Again, you can stir gently with a fork but be careful not to do too much...just until combined.

Here is where you taste a little to see if it needs more sage, pepper or if it needs salt. The broth is usually salty enough if you salt your turkey well.  Shake the pan back and forth to gauge how much broth is in it. You will most likely need to add some of the chicken broth that you used to cook the celery and onion.

It should be moist enough to move back and forth but not be soupy. If you get too much, you can dip some out and you will need to cook longer to dry it up. Normally, it takes about 30 minutes at 450 degrees. Cook until it's brown on top. Save any leftover broth in case you need to add a little when you warm up the leftovers (only if it's on the dry side).

Good luck! Let me know how it turns out......"

I bet you are wondering how it turned out. Would these directions work for you??  Well, I gave it my best shot. Because she warned me 62 times, I was so paranoid about putting in TOO MUCH broth that I didn't put enough! It turned out fairly well, but on the dry and crumbly side. Nobody complained, but only because they knew better. A sleep-deprived, cranky lady cooking her first solo Christmas dinner....just shut up and eat it!
